I love Coldplay and really like their newest song Violet Hill. After reading through the lyrics, I think the song is about a soldier going off to war and questioning why his loved one let him go if they really loved him. Almost like the soldier was testing the loved one and was hoping they would have stopped him from going or at least begged him to stay. I may be way off but that’s what I think, what do you?
Violet Hill Lyrics
Was a long and dark December
From the rooftops I remember
There was snow, white snow
Clearly I remember
From the windows they were watching
While we froze down below
When the future’s architectured
By a carnival of idiots on show
You’d better lie low
If you love me
Won’t you let me know?
Was a long and dark December
When the banks became cathedrals
And the fog
Became God
Priests clutched onto bibles
Hollowed out to fit their rifles
And the cross was held aloft
Bury me in honor
When I’m dead and hit the ground
My Love is opposed when unfold
If you love me
Won’t you let me know?
I don’t want to be a soldier
With the captain of some sinking ship
With snow, far below
If you love me
Why’d you let me go?
I took my love down to Violet Hill
There we sat in snow
All that time she was silent still
So if you love me
Won’t you let me know?
If you love me,
Won’t you let me know?

I love Coldplay too; The Scientist is one of my favorite songs and always gives me a chill when I hear it. I like the new album, although I haven’t had a chance to listen to it properly yet. I think it’s a much bolder and angrier album than their previous ones. Viva la Vida and Violet Hill are great songs.
I like your interpretation of the song; it definitely feels like an anti war song to me, a soldier wanting to be with his love before he goes off to war. The “carnival of idiots on show” might refer to the media circus. But I might be wrong.

I love the words to this song…very sad. I can’t imagine what a man must feel
having to go to war and not wanting to.
