Thirteen Things about MARIBETHI’m very excited about this week’s TT. I have a very special guest writing the list. My father is one of my biggest supporters when it comes to writing. He reads anything I throw at him and gives me honest feedback. Because he is the most intelligent man I know, his opinion means a great deal to me. He is one of my consistent blog readers and enjoys the Thursday Thirteen’s. He came up with a list of his own thirteen. This week’s TT will be thirteen mini crisis in family life. Show him some love and leave comments to support his big debut. He’s a great storyteller, maybe one day I will post a story he wrote.

Have fun and don’t forget the comments.

1…Being in the bathroom with no toilet paper.

2… Losing your child’s tooth before the tooth fairy paid up. (This one happened to me this year, check out my post Tooth Fairy’s Identity almost revealed).

3…Meeting the town snob on a day when you’re dressed like an old tomatoe plant. (Happened to me too many times)

4…Having a hole in your sock when the teacher asked you to remove your sneaker.

5…Not having enough money for all of your children’s lunches. (My parents did a wonderful job raising five children. I can never remember being hungry- in fact I ate too much as a child)

6… Prom Night for your daughter (I’m still about nine years away from this one)

7… Prom Night for your son (Ten years away, I would think this one isn’t as bad as prom night for the daughter)

8…Deciding whether to play golf or watch your daughter’s 8hr softball game. (I can tell you he chose the softball games every time)

9… Deciding who gets to use the family car. (Yeah, this was a bit rough)

10… Driving to work in a blizzard. (over an hour away)

11… Trying to Locate the TV guide (Watching him search was pretty comical, hearing him get mad was quite scary)

12… Having to work on New Year’s Eve. (I certainly missed my daddy on New Year’s Eve, but I know now he did what he had to do. He is a father of five.)

13… Feeding the Family Rabbit. (I don’t think this was all that bad)

Today is starting good. After cruising on over to Keli’s blog at Counterfeit Humans, I received some exciting news. I noticed that Keli received and Excellent Blog award from a fellow reader. I was thrilled for her and was getting ready to send her a pat on the back via cyberspace when I realized that she was handing out awards as well. It was thrilling to see my name and blog listed as one of her recipients for this same award. Writers are filled with insecurities. Am I any good? Do I have any readers?  I could go on and on but you get my drift. Anyway, Keli made this writer a little perkier this morning and I thank her for that. Yay for Keli at Counterfeit Humans, and yay for me over here at Moments and Memories. Today, I will write with a bit more enthusiasm.

In relation to my last two posts, I decided to pick a Red Hot Chili Pepper’s song for Friday’s Song.

Hollywood, it seems so glamorous. For some of us, it’s the over the rainbow, the place only the lucky get to be. Stardom can be lonely and what we perceive as fabulous can quickly turn into dangerous.

Tell me what you think. Remember, this is intended to be a meme, so if you have  a song you would like to put up direct us to it.

Happy Friday!

Tell Me Baby -Lyrics

They come from every state to find
Some dreams were meant to be declined
Tell the man what did you have in mind
What have you come to do

No turning water into wine
No learning while you’re in the line
I’ll take you to the broken sign
You see these lights are blue

Come and get it
Lost it at the city limit
Say goodbye
‘Cause they will find a way to trim it
Everybody
Lookin’ for a silly gimmick
Gotta get away
Can’t take it for another minute

This town is made of many things
Just look at what the current brings
So high it’s only promising
This place was made on you

Tell me baby what’s your story
Where you come from
And where you wanna go this time oh
Tell me lover are you lonely
The thing we need is
Never all that hard to find oh
Tell me baby what’s your story
Where do you come from
And where you wanna go this time oh
You’re so lovely are you lonely
Giving up on the innocence you left behind

Some claim to have the fortitude
Too shrewd to blow the interlude
Sustaining pain to set a mood
Step out to be renewed

I’ll move you like a baritone
Jungle Brothers on the microphone
Getting over with an undertone
It’s time to turn to stone

Chitty chitty baby
When your nose is in the nitty gritty
Life could be a little sweet
But life could be a little shitty
What a pity
Boston and a Kansas city
Looking for a hundred
But you only ever found a fifty

Three fingers in the honeycomb
You ring just like a xylophone
Devoted to the chromosome
The day that you left home

Tell me baby what’s your story
Where you come from
And where you wanna go this time oh
Tell me lover are you lonely
The thing we need is
Never all that hard to find oh
Tell me baby what’s your story
Where do you come from
And where you wanna go this time oh
You’re so lovely are you lonely
Giving up on the innocence you left behind

Tell me baby what’s your story
Where you come from
And where you wanna go this time oh
Tell me lover are you lonely
The thing we need is
Never all that far to find oh
Tell me baby what’s your story
Where do you come from
And where you wanna go this time oh
You’re so lovely are you lonely
Giving up on the innocence you left behind

Thirteen Things about YOUR NAMEMy previous post talked about the premature death of Heath Ledger. This Thursday I have decided to write about thirteen celebrities that died too young. It’s a darker Thursday Thirteen this week for me but it’s what’s been on my mind. It’s unfortunate that drugs played a role in many of these young stars deaths.

If you are interested in more details regarding these celebrities visit Wikipedia.com

1… River Phoenix (Famous movies included, Stand by Me and Running on Empty. -two of my favorites) River was born 8-23-70 and died 10-31-93. Cause of death, speedball (heroin and cocaine) overdose.

2… Chris Farley (Famous for appearing on Saturday Night Live) I loved his skit Fat man in a little coat. He was born 2-15-64 and died 12-18-97. Cause of death, speedball overdose. We named our dog after Farley. He was a hilarious comedian.

I hate the feeling I get when hearing of a young person’s death. Emptiness swirls in the pit of my stomach and anxiety rushes through my bones. I guess when you are young you think about death but hope it is a long way off. Hearing the news of Heath Ledger’s passing saddened me. He was too young to die and had a whole life to live. For reasons unknown his journey into this world ended. His mission was completed.  I choose to believe that we all have a purpose. There are certain people we are meant to meet, influence and learn from.  We evolve, create then transcend. It just makes more sense when this happens after living a long life. Even in death, he affected millions of people and possibly opened their eyes to how short life could be. That in itself is a lesson we must learn.

I witnessed distant cousins of mine bid farewell to their father this week. In today’s world, he was a young man at the age of sixty-two. This family was always admirable. They were a team and you knew it. Both of the parents were strong, goal oriented, rise to the top individuals. They showed their children that with hard work anything could be accomplished. They gave them wings and encouraged them to fly when the time was right. Even though the father battled cancer, he never wanted his children to stick around and wait for him to die. He wanted them to get out and start living their life, so at the end of his, he could see how much they grew. Walking into the funeral home it was obvious how much this man was loved. There were people everywhere paying their respects, reminiscing about a time they shared with him or just sitting quietly on a chair as tears rolled down their cheeks. When it was my turn to hug and offer my condolences to my cousins, I noticed a beautiful thing; all three sons were wearing the same tie. As I walked up to the coffin to pray for the safe return home of the soul of their father, I observed that he too wore the same tie as his sons.  When I wrapped my arms around their mother, it was noticed that she and her daughter both were wearing the same shirt. What a class act, I thought. Even in death, they are a team. Death takes away the people we love but it never can make the impression they left with us disappear. This family left an impression with me that I would never forget. A team’s dynamic changes with the loss of a key player, but the players left behind play harder and stronger. Demonstrating it was the person lost they will forever play for. They will pack away their team uniforms, knowing the captain is no longer with them. But he left them with the courage it takes to become a captain of another team.

This week my mind took me back to my favorite movie of all time, The Outsiders. I loved The Outsiders Movie and can appreciate that the book is required reading for many highschool students. S.E. Hinton was only sixteen when she wrote the novel and was eighteen when it was published. The writer in me finds that inspirational. This movie might be the reason that sparked my interest into writing and poetry. Robert Frost’s poem Nothing Gold Can Stay never left my soul once I heard it read.

Today I choose to list Stevie Wonder’s song Stay Gold as the song of the week. The melody alone can make me cry, but it’s Stevie’s voice that does it.

I will list the lyrics to Stay Gold and also Robert Frost’s poem Nothing Gold Can Stay.

Have a great weekend.

Leave a comment if you loved The Outsiders too and who your favorite character was.

Stay Gold (Stevie Wonder)

Seize upon that moment long ago
One breath away and there you will be
So young and carefree
Again you will see
That place in time…so gold

Steal away into that way back when
You thought that all would last forever
But like the weather
Nothing can ever…and be in time
Stay gold

But can it be
When we can see
So vividly
A memory
And yes you say
So must the day
Too, fade away
And leave a ray of sun
So gold

Life is but a twinkling of an eye
Yet filled with sorrow and compassion
Though not imagined
All things that happen
Will age too old
Though gold

Nothing Gold Can Stay(Robert Frost)

Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

Kids can definitely come up with some clever comebacks. They are full of wit that makes adults envious. I love to see life through their eyes it’s actually pretty funny. My sister and I have daughters in the same grade, same class. Because I am the caretaker of her daughter while she is working, it is usually my duty to take them to school. Friday my sister had the day off so she offered to drive them. I was delighted. Trying to get my son and daughter out the door each morning is sitcom worthy. By the time I finally have them dressed, fed, and hair brushed we have about two minutes to get out the door, hop in the car and drive to school in hopes we get there before they are marked tardy.

My sister came early for them so she could assist me in getting them out the door. She zipped up my son’s coat and he was ready to go. She started to put my daughter’s coat on while I brushed through her hair once more. We were side my side primping her as if she was a model behind the curtains getting a quick wardrobe change before hitting the runway. While I was twisting her hair into a ponytail my sister was straightening the collar of her coat. We gave her a once over and without hesitation simultaneously put our thumbs to our mouths and gave a quick lick. Yes, we were doing what as young girls we swore we never would do, we were going to wipe the toothpaste that outlined my daughter’s lips off with our spit on a finger. We were in a trance and had one thing on our mind; get her out the door so they will not be late. It was what my daughter said that broke the trance. “Not your lick.” My sister and I looked at each other and burst out laughing. My daughter didn’t mind my thumb spit coming at her but she wasn’t going to allow my sisters spit to touch her face. That’s one for the books and a quick witted comeback if I must say.

This week I listed things I remembered about being thirteen. I thought it would be appropriate to post a song I recall loving at thirteen.

Back in the day, my friends and I loooved Ozzy and thought his voice was the absolute best. He’s aged and so have we but we still have his songs of yesterday. Goodbye to Romance will always remain one of my favorites.

Even if you never listened or thought you could like an Ozzy Osbourne song, I think this one will pull you in.

Goodbye To Romance Lyrics

Yesterday has been and gone
Tomorrow will I find the sun or will it rain
Everybody’s having fun except me I’m the lonely one
I live in shame

Chorus:
I said goodbye to romance
Goodbye to friends….I tell u
Goodbye to all the past
I guess that we’ll meet, we’ll meet in the end

I’ve been the king, I’ve been the clown
No broken wings can’t hold me down
I’m free again
The jester with a broken crown
It won’t be me this time around to love in vain

Chorus…

And I feel the time is right although I know
That you just might say to me
What ya gonna do
What ya gonna do
Cause’ I have to take this chance
Goodbye to friends and true romance
And to all of you
And to all of you

Come on now..
Solo

Chorus…

And the weather’s lookin fine and I think the sun will shine again
And I feel I’ve cleared my mind all the past is left behind again

Chorus…
