It’s time for a Friday Song. This week I was thrilled to see a comment from one of my best friends.  I have not heard from her in a while and was delighted to know that she reads my blog. We spent a lot of our childhood doing much of nothing and if I could go back for a day I would.

This week I chose Dave Matthew’s Old dirt hill as the weekly song. It’s about growing up, falling in love and wishing you could go back. We shared all of that together.

Do you have a song that brings you back to childhood?

 Old Dirt Hill-Lyrics

Ride my bike down that old dirt hill (can’t catch me)
First time without my trainin’ wheels
First time I kissed you I lost my legs (can’t catch me)
Bring that beat back to me again

Scream and shout out loud our innocence
Days when all we did would never end

Bring that beat back to me again
Take me back, take me back, can’t catch me can’t catch me
Bring that beat back to me again
Take me back, take me back, can’t catch me can’t catch me

Smokin’ on the railroad bridge
I used to ride my bike down that old dirt hill
The first time I kissed you I lost my legs
Bring that beat back to me again

Scream and shout out loud our innocence
Days when all we did would never end

Screamin’ down that old dirt hill
Bring that beat back to me again

Oh when it gets hard
That’s when the days I remember seem so far
When I was just a kid that’s what I miss
When I was just a kid that’s what I miss
Take me back, Take me back to that beat again

Smokin’ on the railroad bridge
Bring that beat back to me again (again)
Bring that beat back to me again (can’t catch me)
Bring that beat back to me again
First time all we were was good friends
Bring that beat back to me again
Bring that beat back to me again
Bring that beat back to me again (can’t catch me)
Bring that beat back to me again
Bring that beat back to me again
Bring that beat back to me again

Thirteen Things about MARIBETHA memory came to mind this week, I recalled playing games in my backyard as a little girl. Today, I have fun watching my children play the same games. With spring right around the corner, I know it’s only a matter of time before we are outside playing. This week I am listing thirteen games I played as a little girl.

1… HOW MANY STEPS BEFORE THE QUEEN- SOMEONE WOULD BECOME THE QUEEN. EACH PLAYER WOULD ASK “HOW MANY STEPS BEFORE THE QUEEN?” THE QUEEN WOULD RESPOND BY SAYING DIFFERENT STEPS, EG. ONE TINY STEP OR THREE GIANT STEPS. IF THE PLAYER MOVED WITHOUT ASKING MAY I, THEY WOULD HAVE TO RETURN TO THEIR ORIGINAL POINT. THE FIRST ONE REACHING THE QUEEN WON AND BECAME THE QUEEN.

2… RED LIGHT, GREEN LIGHT—SOMEONE WOULD CALL OUT GREEN LIGHT GO AND WE RUN AROUND THE YARD UNTIL SOMEONE YELLED RED LIGHT STOP. IT DEFINITELY RELEASED SOME ENERGY.

3…PIE GAME- SOMEONE WOULD BE THE PIE MAKER AND THINK OF A CERTAIN FLAVOR PIE. THE REMAINING KIDS WOULD COME UP TO THE PIE MAKER AND ASK, “DO YOU HAVE LEMON PIE TODAY?” IF THE ANSWER WAS YES THE PIE MAKER WOULD CHASE THE ONE WHO GUESSED THE CORRECT PIE. IF THE PIE MAKER TAGGED THE GUESSER PRIOR TO REACHING THE SAFE ZONE, THE GUESSER WOULD BECOME THE PIE MAKER.

4…OBSTACLE COURSE- WE WOULD USE ANYTHING FROM BROOM STICKS TO SKATEBOARDS. THE PERSON WHO DESIGNED THE COURSE WOULD SHOW OTHERS WHAT THEY NEEDED TO DO AND IN WHAT ORDER. WHO EVER RAN THE OBSTACLE COURSE IN THE QUICKEST AMOUNT OF TIME WON THE GAME.

5…STATUES- WE WOULD RUN AROUND THE YARD AND WHEN SOMEONE CALLED OUT STATUE, WE HAD TO FREEZE AND TAKE A POSE. THE GUESSER HAD TO TRY AND GUESS WHAT YOU WERE PRETENDING TO BE.

6… FREEZE TAG- RUN AROUND UNTIL YOU ARE TAGGED AND ONCE YOU ARE, YOU BECOME FROZEN AND CANNOT MOVE UNTIL ANOTHER PLAYER WHO HAS NOT BEEN TAGGED TOUCHES YOU, RELEASING THE FREEZE HOLD.

7… DODGE BALL-ONE OF MY FAVORITES, TRY TO AVOID BEING HIT BY THE FLYING BALL THROWN AT YOU.

8… JAIL BREAK- ANOTHER FORM OF TAG, I CAN’T FULLY REMEMBER THE RULES OF THIS ONE BUT I KNOW WE HAD A LOT OF FUN PLAYING IT.

9… SIMON SAYS- EVERYONE KNOWS THIS ONE RIGHT?

10… MONKEY IN THE MIDDLE- TWO PLAYERS TAKE TURNS THROWING A BALL OVER THE MIDDLE PERSON’S HEAD. IF THE MIDDLE PERSON CATCHES IT, THE ONE WHO THREW IT HAS TO BECOME THE MONKEY IN THE MIDDLE

11… HIDE AND GO SEEK- WHO DOESN’T LOVE THIS GAME? MY FAVORITE, I HATED BEING THE SEEKER.

12… HOPSCOTCH- WE WOULD DRAW A HUGE HOPSCOTCH BOARD IN THE ALLEY NEXT TO OUR HOUSE, EACH FIND A SPECIAL ROCK AND TAKE TURNS TOSSING IT TO THE CORRECT NUMBER. IF YOUR ROCK LANDED ON THE DESIRED NUMBER, YOU COULD HOP TO IT. HOWEVER, YOU HAD TO BE CAREFUL NOT TO HOP ON ANY OTHER NUMBERS THAT HAD ROCKS.

13… COPS AND ROBBERS- SIMILAR TO JAIL BREAK BUT NOT AS MANY RULES, IT WAS ALWAYS FUN BEING THE ROBBER, I GUESS I LIKED BEING THE REBEL.

We all have a demon. Something or someone lurking inside of us begging us to go the wrong way, do the wrong things or make the wrong choices. What the demon tempts us with may differ but his intention is the same, he wants us to fall. After reviewing some of my writings, I stumbled upon something I wrote a long time ago. It’s a bit dark but it came from within.

I’m not even sure where I would market a poem like this, so I thought I would paste it on my blog.

When the demon strikes, strike back by refusing to give in to the temptation being dangled in front of you.

The Demon

Please help me

My mind is consumed

With images of you

I blink, scream,sleep,

Try to erase the view.

A minute, a second, a year

My soul is shaking, I have changed

I scream out, save me, I live in fear

A moment has passed, I tried to think,

Of something else, something right

You are the quench of my thirst

I must take a drink, but I won’t

I can’t, it’s poison, it will instantly kill

The life I have been living,

Why am I seeking this thrill?

The demon is axing away, chopping

At my very core, laughing, haunting

Tempting with no sign of stopping.

He takes on an innocent form

Waving behind you, commanding the storm

Only when I am left crying on the floor

Knowing I destroyed me, will he shut the door.

I have made a pact with myself. I am getting my work out there, in hopes of seeing my dreams come to life. I have spent so much time, talking, daydreaming, and writing about writing that I have actually written less.

Let me reitterate that, I have written less material that I could try to have published. No more procrastinating, I am going full forward. I have taken writing courses, studied many books about becoming a writer, and now it’s time I take what I have learned and put it to good use. So, wish me luck.

I know it’s a big sea out there, this little fish has to find a way to catch up to the bigger ones or at least leave an impression.

About six or so months ago, I was checking out Brooklyn Arden’s blog. She had a song posted from a movie she recently saw. I liked it very much but forgot about it soon after. Yesterday, while making my bed I heard a familiar tune looked up at my television set and there was the video of the song. I stopped what I was doing, sat at the edge of my bed and listened. The voices singing the song are captivating. While listening to the song, another thought popped into my head. Brooklyn Arden is an editor, and appropriately so. It makes sense that she would have saw potential in this song long before most of us. This week the song is up for an Oscar.  Take a listen and see what you think.

Glen Hansard – Falling Slowly Lyrics

I don’t know you
But I want you
All the more for that
Words fall through me
And always fool me
And I can’t react
And games that never amount
To more than they’re meant
Will play themselves out

Take this sinking boat and point it home
We’ve still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you have a choice
You’ve made it now

Falling slowly, eyes that know me
And I can’t go back
Moods that take me and erase me
And I’m painted black
You have suffered enough
And warred with yourself
It’s time that you won

Take this sinking boat and point it home
We’ve still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you had a choice
You’ve made it now

Take this sinking boat and point it home
We’ve still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you had a choice
You’ve made it now
Falling slowly sing your melody
I’ll sing along

Thirteen Things about MaribethI gave up chocolate for lent. This is a big deal for a chocoholic. I am used to waking up and having a small piece of chocolate, it’s how I welcome a new day. So, for the next month or so I will be living free of my chocolate addiction, which makes me think about all of the chocolate candy bars I have loved or tried in the past. This week I am writing about thirteen candy bars.
What’s your favorite?1…Heath Bar- Yum-love this chocolate covered toffee. It’s a great candy bar to mix into ice cream for a special summer treat.

2…Kit Kat- Who doesn’t love a Kit Kat. To save calories, I buy the mini ones and only eat one of the sticks.

3…Snickers- Chocolate, caramel, peanuts, sinful.

4…Chunky- Ooh, a great combination of lots of good things. I have to say though, Cadbury makes a Fruit and Nut bar that is similar to the Chunky and I think I like it more.

5… Whatchamacalit – This bar was hugely popular when I was a little girl and was definitely yummelicious.

6… Mr. Goodbar- I’m a sucker for anything chocolate with nuts and this one definitely satisfies by sweet and salty tooth.

7… Nutrageous- Chocolate, Peanuts and Peanut butter-scrumptious.

8… Mars Bar- another one that was popular when I was younger, very good but not my favorite.

9… Twix- Satisfies a sweet tooth.

10… Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups- So good.

11… Bar None- I loved this bar, I don’t know why it was nixed.

12… 100 Grand Bar- I remember as a young girl I actually thought these bars cost a lot of money.

13… Hershey’s with almonds- I am a PA resident, I have to include this famous bar.

I love all kinds of personality tests. I am always searching to see if the results match my perception of myself. Since today is nearing the end and I have not written a blog yet (thanks to President’s day,  all the kiddo’s were home and mama didn’t have much time to write). I took this test over at C.J. writer’s blog and thought I would paste it on mine for some Monday fun. So, what movie are you?

This week I’m in the mood to listen to Edie Brickell. Her voice gets me in a good mood and always makes me want to sing along.

I have chosen What I am for today’s song. Embrace who you are, don’t try to be someone else, you will always end up disappointed.

 Happy Friday!

What I Am/Lyrics

I’m not aware of too many things
I know what I know if you know what I mean

Philosophy, is the talk on a cereal box
Religion, is a smile on a dog
I’m not aware of too many things
i know what I know if you know what I mean

Choke me in the shallow water
Before I get too deep

What I am is what I am are you what you are or what
What I am is what I am are you what you are or what

Oh I’m not aware of too many things
I know what I know if you know what I mean

Philosophy, is a walk on the slippery rocks
Religion, is a light in the fog
I’m not aware of too many things
I know what I know if you know what I mean
Do do ya

Choke me in the shallow water
Before I get too deep
Chuck me in the shallow water
Before I get too deep

What I am is what I am are you what you are or what
What I am is what I am are you what you are or what
What I am is what I am are you what you are or what you are
What I am is what I am are you what you are or what

Da da da da
I say I say I say I do hey hey hey hey hey hey

Choke me in the shallow water
Before I get too deep
Chuck me in the shallow water
Before I get too deep

Choke me in the shallow water before I get too deep
Choke me in the shallow water before I get too deep
Choke me in the shallow water before I get too deep

Don’t let me get too deep
Don’t let me get too deep
Don’t let me get too deep
Don’t let me get too deep

What I am is what I am are you what you are or what
What I am is what I am are you what you are or what
What I am is what I am are you what you are or what you are
What I am is what I am are you what you are or what

Or what you are oh
Or what you are oh oh oh
Say what I am

Thirteen Things about Maribeth

Happy Valentines Day!
Tell someone you love him or her today. In return,  you will experience love.
For a special treat this week, I included a song you could play while reading 13 sayings of love.

1…Charles Caleb Colton
If you cannot inspire a woman with love of you, fill her above the brim with love of herself; all that runs over will be yours.

2…Thomas Parnell
Let those love now who never loved before; Let those who always loved, now love the more.

3…Sophocles
One word frees us of all the weight and pain of life: that word is love.

4…David Wilkerson
Love is not something you feel. It’s something you do.

5…Leo Buscaglia
Love is always bestowed as a gift — freely, willingly, and without expectation… We don’t love to be loved; we love to love.

6…John Powell
The only love worthy of a name is unconditional.

7…Martin Luther King, Jr.
I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality.

8…Benjamin Franklin
If you would be loved, love and be lovable.

9…St. Francis of Assisi
Lord, grant that I might not so much seek to be loved as to love.

10…William Gladstone
We look forward to the time when the power to love of will replace the love of power. Then will our world know the blessings of peace.

11… O. Baird
May no gift be too small to give,
nor too simple to receive,
which is wrapped in thoughtfulness
and tied with love.

12…John Lennon
All you need is love.

13…Geoffrey Chaucer
Amor vincit omnia. (Love conquers all)
