I am stealing American Idol’s theme this week for my Friday’s Song. If you are not a fan of the show, let me explain. This week they had the contestants pick a song from the year they were born. I, was born in 1973 (This might explain why I tend to love earthy music) so, I thought I would check to see what songs were popular that year. I could have chosen ten that I love but decided to go with the Rolling Stones. This week’s song is Angie.

My interpretation of the song: Two souls destined to meet, fall in love but realize love alone will not take them where they need to go. After much thought,  one decides it may be better to separate even though he will never meet a woman like her again. I think in life that happens all of the time. To me, this song is about the one that got away, or the one you let go.

What are you listening to?

Angie/Lyrics

Angie, angie, when will those clouds all disappear?
Angie, angie, where will it lead us from here?
With no loving in our souls and no money in our coats
You cant say were satisfied
But angie, angie, you cant say we never tried
Angie, youre beautiful, but aint it time we said good-bye?
Angie, I still love you, remember all those nights we cried?
All the dreams we held so close seemed to all go up in smoke
Let me whisper in your ear:
Angie, angie, where will it lead us from here?
Oh, angie, dont you weep, all your kisses still taste sweet
I hate that sadness in your eyes
But angie, angie, aint it time we said good-bye?
With no loving in our souls and no money in our coats
You cant say were satisfied
But angie, I still love you, baby
Evrywhere I look I see your eyes
There aint a woman that comes close to you
Come on baby, dry your eyes
But angie, angie, aint it good to be alive?
Angie, angie, they cant say we never tried

It’s amazing what other people can do for your blog. Tanyetta over at Days Like These mentioned my blog on her site and I have received tons of new visitors because of it.

I think it would only be appropriate if I offered her a special thank you and gave her blog a nod as well. She is a fellow mother married to her high school sweetheart raising a young adult child and a toddler. Upon reading her blog, you will discover her spirit is contagious and welcoming.

Thanks Tanyetta for finding something in my writing that you thought others would enjoy too.

Birthdays in my family are reason to celebrate. Another excuse to hang with the family, eat some good food, share a lot of laughs and make some silent wishes when blowing out the candles. It is always a given, a birthday does not go past without singing, applause and well wishes. However, for my brother it is a bit different. His birthday is at the tail end of a ton of birthdays so he inadvertently gets the shaft. It might be his unassuming personality that leads others to believe that he wouldn’t mind so much if we didn’t have a big hoorah for him.  Men really could care a less about that stuff right?

So, last week when his birthday came, no one thought it was a big deal that there was no cake, no eats and no candles to blow out. A few pecks on the cheek and some lottery tickets thrown into a card seemed appropriate enough. As he walked out of my yard, I saw the light. Maybe, for once he would like to be celebrated, he did do time growing up with four sisters who would have walked out in a storm if their birthdays were not acknowledged.

“We should have got him a cake,” I said to his wife. Within minutes, we planned an impromptu birthday party that was held at my parents’ kitchen table to honor my brother. We ordered pizza and his wife ran for a cake. After we inhaled the food, it was time for the cake and candles. When the cake was placed in front of him, his celebration turned comical. His birthday cake had a giant leprechaun sitting upon the icing with the words Happy St. Patrick’s Day written underneath. The only candles we could find were a pack of Hanukah candles my mother purchased from a yard sale. It wouldn’t be half as funny except we are an Italian catholic family. Placing Jewish holiday candles upon a cake with a saint’s name on it seemed a bit out there.

There was something on the kitchen table for every holiday except a birthday; we had the St. Patrick’s Day cake, The Hanukah candles, a Halloween dishcloth (we used to wipe up a spill) and some bunny decorations. It took us a minute to regain our composure and catch our breath from laughing so hard, but somehow we all managed to belt out a great rendition of Happy Birthday.

We are not the Joneses, no one needs to try and keep up with this family but there is no other family I would want to be a part of. My brother did not get a fancy cake or hundreds of guests, but his birthday will forever remain one of my favorite memories. I don’t know what he wished for that night when blowing out his Hanukah/Birthday candles but I know I wished for many more of those happy birthday’s to come, I’ll even take a cake with a leprechaun, after all leprechauns symbolize good luck.

I love Cheryl Crow! Everytime I hear one of her songs I immediately get uplifted and feel like tackling a new day. This week I chose one of her new songs titled Love is Free.

Love is Free and we should pass it around more often. Have a great weekend everyone. Happy Easter.

Love is Free/ Lyrics

What are you listening to?

She got a shack
Floating down the poncho train
With the water rolling in
You gotta swim
Before the levees start to crack

Another day
Another dollar down the drain
You go to town
No one’s around
Cause if you drown
There ain’t no hope for coming back

It ain’t no big thing if you lose your faith
They kinda like to keep you in your place
You never know what might be coming your way

Oh everybody
Devil take your money
Money’s got no hold on me
Oh oh everybody’s making love
Cause love is free

You go to church
And pray to God for no more rain
A Cadillac
A paper sack
Well hey there Jack
You want some bourbon for the pain

Hey tambourine
Ain’t no rhythm on the street
With the voodoo
What do you do
When the radio just plays on anyway?

Those crazy fingers in your jelly jar
They’ll jack your money
While you sleep in you car
They got the karma
They ain’t getting too far

Oh everybody
Devil take your money
My money’s got no hold on me
Oh oh everybody’s making love
Cause love is free

Everybody come together
Everybody come together
Everybody come together
Everybody come together

Yeah everybody
Devil take your money
Money got no hold on me
Oh oh everybody’s making love
Cause love is free

Oh everybody
Devil take your money
Money got no hold of me
Oh oh everybody’s making love
Cause love is free

Love is free

Love is free

A mother wears many hats but she also carries many loads.Loads of emotions fill a single day when you become a mother.

Exhaustion- Baby waking up.

Excitement, the baby recognizes your face and smiles.

Anxiety, the baby is crying and will not stop.

Tranquility, the baby is cooing as you rock her to sleep.

Sadness, the baby is cutting a tooth and does not understand why she suffers in pain.

Happiness, the baby rolled over for the first time.

To be a mother means you agree to be vulnerable. A lifetime of emotions happens every day. The salary deserved is incalculable.

I found this piece I wrote for a similac contest years ago. I thought I would post it because it still holds true. Any mother could relate.

This week I had to watch my father say goodbye to his big brother. A brother he shared many memories with and looked up to. When we are young, we think we will never grow old, but we do. I am witnessing my own children getting older and it makes me sad. I still feel like I am the same person I was at thirteen but my appearance proves I have grown. This week I chose Landslide by Fleetwood Mac for Friday’s song. If children knew what we know now, they would never wish to grow up fast.

Happy Friday!

What are you listening to this week?

Landslide Lyrics

took my love, i took it down
climbed a mountain and i turned around
and i saw my reflection in the snow covered hills
’til the landslide brought it down
oh, mirror in the sky
-what is love?
-can the child within my heart rise above?
-can i sail thru the changin’ ocean tides?
-can i handle the seasons of my life?
i don’t know…..
well, i’ve been afraid of changin’
’cause i’ve built my life around you
but time makes you bolder
even children get older
and i’m getting older too
oh, take my love, take it down
climb a mountain and turn around
-and if you see my reflection in the snow covered hills
well the landslide will bring it down
-and if you see my reflection in the snow covered hills
well the landslide will bring it down
the landslide will bring it down

Thirteen Things about Maribeth

I am a fan of American Idol, but I am a bigger fan of the Beatles. This week the contestants took turns singing tunes written by John and Paul.
Katherine McPhee sang one of my favorites written by George Harrison (Something). This week’s TT will be my list of Beatles favorites.
What’s your favorite?

1…In my life (This song represents a trip down memory lane, my daughter fell in love with this song too, listening to her sing it makes me smile)

2…Don’t let me down (Nobody ever loves me like she does, love this lyric)

3…Ob La Di-Ob La Da (So much fun, this song can turn a bad mood around for sure)

4…Hey Jude (I think Jude may be a big contender if I have a boy- I love this lullaby and the advice Paul gave to the little boy)

5… Here Come’s The Sun (This song for me, represents hope)

6… When I’m Sixty-four (Fun, and the irony is Paul is now sixty-four(I’m sure he feels many years from now came fast)

7…With a little help from my friends (Would you still love me if I sang out of tune? Love at first sight-it happens all of the time)

8…Yesterday (This songs tugs at my heartstrings every time I hear it)

9…Yellow Submarine (I loved this song as a little girl)

10…Octopus’s Garden (A good one to play for the kids)

11…Nowhere Man (Everyone knows a nowhere man)

12…Let it be (How can’t you love this song?)

13…Penny Lane (The tune gets stuck in your head and you sing it over and over all day long)

I think I could have listed thirteen more, but I will stop there.

On Friday, I will be surprising my son’s kindergarten class, I am the guest reader scheduled. I have decided to read the students the story Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. It is his favorite book and I thought it would be a fun read for the children.

Two years ago, I surprised my daughter’s kindergarten class and read The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. I am not a crafty person but I was proud of the tree I made out of a coffee can. The teacher loved it so much she asked if she could keep it. I filled the can with lollipops and handed the kids notepads as a special treat, explaining paper was made out of trees.

For my son, I want the day to be just as special, I am heading to the craft store to buy some stuff to make a monster. I have an idea of what I want to do; I will be using a coffee can once again. However, I’m a bit stumped on what the treat should be, should I do cupcakes and make little monster faces out of them? Does anyone out there have a creative suggestion for a monster treat? If it were Halloween, the possibilities would be endless. Besides a bunny that looks like a monster, I’m not finding what I am looking for.I am going to bring in lunch bags and have the children make monsters out of the bag, fun right?

Moments as these are what make me love being a mommy, I love knowing that my son’s face will light up when I walk into the classroom. Before I know it, he will be asking me to drop him off at school a block away.  Then I will become like the monsters in the book, pleading with him not to go, because I love him so.
