Thirteen Things about Maribeth

I have not done a TT in quite some time. Tonight I thought I would jump back in and do a list of 13 Christmas presents I remember receiving. When you are a child you can't wait for christmas to come and hope you get a mountain of toys. I am sure if you add up all of the gifts I received as a young girl they would at least make a small heap and yet I found it hard to recall thirteen. It was never about the gifts, but, it takes some growing up to realize that.

Thirteen gifts I could recall:

1.... Italian Barbie (I loved her very much, I was so happy to finally have a Barbie with dark hair instead of blonde.)

2...Texas Instrument Computer (It was a gift to the family, I stayed up late many of nights learning how to enter a program that made the words I LOVE YOU fill the screen. I also learned to play blackjack which was very addicting

3...Organ (A hand-me-down gift from cousins but we loved it nonetheless) A music book came with it and it was the first time I heard IF by Bread. I loved them ever since.

4...A red boom box (my very own radio and to boot it was red, music never sounded any better)

5...Nerf football (I was a bit of a tomboy and was delighted with my orange and blue football)

6...Connect Four (loved this game)

7...Barrel of Monkeys (Christmas wasn't Christmas without receiving these in our stockings)

8...The Elephant Game (I'm not sure if this is the exact name but you wore elephant trunks and tried to suck up peanuts)

9...Simon (We had so much fun trying to remember the blinking lights)

10...Liz Claiborne purse (I couldn't believe I actually had a real Liz Claiborne)

11...Ice Skates (Finally I had my very own pair and no longer had to borrow my older sisters)

12...Diary (I felt funny writing in a diary at a young age but now I don't know what I would do without a journal)

13...Crossword Books (I loved my crosswords-still do)

Thirteen Things about Maribeth
With four kids, a husband and two dogs life is guaranteed to get hectic at times. Chaos is what I know. I have had people ask me on many occasions, “How do you do it?” My answer is always the same, “There is a place in my mind that I go when life becomes frantic. I run through a field of flowers with a bandanna wrapped around my head, the sun is shining, birds are chirping and I am singing (okay so I’m singing off-key but no one could hear me so who cares). However, before I could run too far something always happens to jerk me back into reality, like tripping over a sneaker and falling flat onto my face while taking the bowl of cereal that I slapped off the cupboard in mid-fall with me.

Sure, there are days I envision jumping off a bridge rather than running through a field of flowers. It’s on those days that I remind myself that one day it will be the chaos I miss.
This week I will list thirteen daily guarantees with a family of six.

1…The garbage can seems to always be full

2… The dishwasher fills up very quickly. (Even with a dishwasher, the sink still accumulates dishes)

3… You can do three loads of laundry a day and still have more.

4… There is someone always hungry. (Despite the fact they just ate)

5… There is always someone thirsty (You pour one drink, sit down to do something and then someone else advises that they are now thirsty too.)

6… There is a spill at least once a day (Last night I salvaged the cheez-its my children left out in the rain only to have them fall out of the cupboard onto the freshly vacuumed floor minutes later)

7… Arguments are happening at all times (I was sitting there, I was watching TV first, Mom said it was my turn on the computer. Note to mother’s, it’s usually moments like this that I try to find my field of flowers)

8… There is never enough hot water for everyone to get a bath or shower (showers and baths must be spaced out over a few hours.)

9… There is always a mess somewhere (Trying to keep a tidy house with four kids is like trying to keep an up-do in a wind tunnel)

10… There are always too many lights on. I am constantly switching off lights to try to conserve energy.

11… Something always goes missing (like a homework assignment or a test that needed to be signed.)

12… Hugs and kisses happen constantly (This guarantee I like)

13…Everything will happen all at once as soon as you get the phone call you were waiting all day to receive.

Thirteen Things about Maribeth

As I mentioned earlier in the week, Monday was my birthday. Birthday’s are to be celebrated, regardless of your age. Aging brings wisdom and that in itself is a wonderful gift to receive. I must admit however, sometimes I wish I did not know now what I did not know then. Once the light bulb (wisdom) turns on it gets harder to be the person you once were. This week I celebrated my birthday with thirteen very special women. Each one of them brings something different to my life and I would not want to live without any one of them. I received great gifts, much more than I needed but I would be lying if I said it wasn’t fun opening them. Here are thirteen fabulous gifts received. (Maybe a few more than thirteen)
1…Yankee Candle and a pair of hoop earrings (Thanks big sis)

2…A great tote bag by L.L. Bean and the Notebook DVD (Donna, what a friend.)

3…A year subscription to Cosmo (Rachelle, always known for her unique gifts)

4… The Instuction:Living the Life Your Soul Intended (I am already 75 pages into this thought provoking book by Ainslie Macleod- It’s easy to be a deep thinker when you have a friend like Jessica)

5… Half of my dinner (sushi) paid for, a great water bottle and Moana Lotion (Little Sis, loved her gift)

6… Grapesicle Lotion, Spray, and more lotion and spray from Victoria Secrets (Thanks to Heidi, I will be smelling good enough to eat)

7… Salt and Pepper Mill from Pampered Chef (Nicole knows how much I love fresh ground pepper)

8…A beautiful bracelet that looks like chain links but when you turn it sideways they spell God (My sister-in-law Renee knows how serious I am about my faith)

9… A Lia Sophia brown chunky bracelet and an awesome brown sweater to match (Kristen knows my taste. I am always looking for a zippie or a sweater to throw on and this one is my new favorite)

10…Lottery Tickets (Lori knows how much I love a scratch off, but unfortunately I didn’t win)

11…Cash (my mother knows that a married mother of four can always use some cash of her own)

12…Dinner (My hubby is taking me to dinner Friday night and I cannot wait)

13. An awesome pink hoody from Talbots (Big Big Sis-Love It!)

Opening the gifts was awesome but having everyone I love take time to celebrate my day was priceless. I am a lucky lady. I hope all of them know just how much I love them.

Thirteen Things about Maribeth

My son went down the basement today to get his football pants out of the dryer and got the wits scared out of him. I didn’t realize he was down there and I shut off the light and closed the door. My poor little guy, he ran up those steps so quick and I immediately realized what I did. I felt so bad but it got me thinking about fears. We all have them but what they are differs. This week I decided I will list thirteen phobias for Thursday Thirteen.

What are your fears? Did they make the list?

1…Claustrophobia- Fear of Confined places (my son, daughter and nephew accidentally locked themselves into a closet while playing and until this day my son or my daughter will not be left alone in a small place with a door shut)

2… Acrophobia- Fear of Heights (As I get older heights seem to scare me a bit more)

3… Ailurophobia- Fear of Cats (My mother is deathly afraid of cats and will not even watch one on a commercial)

4… Apiphobia- Fear of Bees (My husband is not allergic to bees but will scream like a girl if a bee comes near him)

5… Arsonphobia –Fear of Fire (One of my worst fears)

6… Aviophobia- Fear of Flying (I have never been on an airplane, so I guess you can say I have this phobia

7… Bibliophobia –Fear of Books (I don’t think I could relate to this one)

8…Brontophobia- Fear or thunder and lightning (I recall once when I was younger a girlfriend of my brother-in-laws came in from California and was scared to death of one of the thunderstorms) They can definitely be scary at times.

9… Chorophobia- Fear of Dancing ( I say dance anyway)

10… Cleisiophobia- Fear of being locked in an enclosed place (My children have this after their closet experience. I hope they grow out of it eventually)

11… Coulrophobia- Fear of Clowns (I think many people have this fear)

12… Enochlophobia –Fear of Crowds (I have become panicked in crowded areas, but nothing I didn’t get over)

13… Myrmecophobia- Fear of Ants (If I see an army of ants marching my way and we are indoors I will screech like you never heard before and run as far as way as possible. If they are outside I am okay with seeing a pile of them.)

Thirteen Things about MaribethI collect something for all of my children. For my oldest daughter I collect Fairies (because I am an angel collector, when she was born I thought it would neat to start a collection for her. Fairies have wings too, so that is how I decided on her collection.)
My son’s collection is snowmen. He was a chubby baby and loved the snow so I decided on Snowmen
My third child/daughter loved a giraffe blanket when she was a baby. She could not fall asleep unless she had her giraffe covering her. Therefore, I decided to collect giraffes for her.
When my fourth daughter was born recently I wondered what I would collect for her. For whatever reason, elephants came to mind. So, I decided to collect elephants for her. Ironically, after scanning through my e-mails I discovered that the last e-mail my father sent me was of an elephant drawing a self-portrait. Elephants are unique animals and even though they are giant creatures, there is something gentle about them.

This week I listed 13 facts about elephants. I also included the you tube segment on the painting elephants.

1…. Elephants typically reach puberty at thirteen or fourteen years of age

2…Elephant trunks can get very heavy. It is not uncommon to see elephants resting them over a tusk!

3…Elephants cry, play, have incredible memories, and laugh

4… The Elephants Trunk has more than 40,000 muscles and no bones

5… There are 3 species of elephants- The African Sevanna, The Asian and the African forest elephant

6…The bottom of an elephants foot has a pattern that is individualistic (much like a human’s fingerprint)

7…They are the largest living land animal

8…Male Elephants are called Bulls and Female Elephants are called Cows

9…Baby elephants are called calves and could weigh 200 pounds at birth and stand 3 feet high

10… Jumbo the Elephant was an African Elephant

11…An elephant may live as long as 70 years

12…Dumbo was ridiculed for his big ears but he showed everyone when he was able to use his ears as wings and fly.

13… Elephants can not jump
